The Importance Of Good Nutrition

As our bodies age it can be harder to enjoy the same foods we always have when it becomes more difficult for our bodies to process foods. Food may not taste as good as it once did and the amount comfortably consumed may also change. These changes can lead to inadequate nutrients being consumed.

Why are nutrients so important as we age?

Good nutrient consumption can:

  • Reduce the risk of illness and disease
  • Help our bones and muscles to stay strong and healthy
  • Reduce the risk of chronic health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diablets and osteoporosis

When not enough nutrients are consumed health issues can arise such as:

  • Weight gain or loss
  • Susceptability to illness
  • Chronic illness or conditions can be made worse

Changes in your apetite and the amount you feel like eating at meals can mean smaller portions and smaller nutritional intake. This can mean a loss of vitamins, minerals and protein.

What can you do to optimise your nutritional intake?

  • Eat smaller meals more often
  • Make sure meals include a variety of foods
  • Ensure you are eating enough fibre
  • Foods to include: fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, oats, whole grains, protein.
  • Try to have some protein with every meal
  • Minimise salt intake
  • Reduce processed food
  • Keep well hydrated, especially in warmer weather
  • Avoid excess alcohol consumption.

If you have any concerns about your nutritional intake, please speak with your GP about this and they can recommend a plan to improve things.
