Ev's Story.... Why I became a care & support worker

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, fifty percent of new workers joining the Careseekers platform have moved to care and support work from industries that have been hardest hit by lockdowns, restrictions and loss of hours. So which industries are they coming from? Why did they decide on care and support work? And what does a career change to care and support look like for the worker?

We have been chatting to workers and would love to share their stories with you.

Ev A's Story

"I came from Melbourne to Sydney during COVID-19 due to personal circumstances and to be closer to family. I had come from a teacher's aid in a primary school background and also taught Zumba, cooking gardening and so much more for the community. I loved my job.

Becoming a support worker was the best work for me, I had the experience and it is something I always loved. The purpose of my life and values of my life, I live through supporting. People without a voice are often put into society norm boxes but they don't fit in those boxes. I want to help these people live their best lives. That comes through me aiding them to do that and being their advocate. Advocacy is a huge part of my life.

For example, the reason why I have this haircut is I did Shave For A Cure!

Support work is part of my evolution - life is too short not to help others!"

Care and support work is an industry that is pandemic-proof. During all COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, care and support workers have been able to continue working, providing essential services to their clients.
