Keeping Cool This Summer
Extreme heat can be dangerous and can result in heat-related illnesses including heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke.
It is important to prepare now as the weather is warming, to ensure your home is cool and comfortable during the summer months.
Some tips to keep your home cool include:
- Stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic beverages such as water. Keep bottles of water in the freezer and grab one when you go out. As the ice melts you will have cold water with you.
- Avoid going out during the heat of the day. Try to go out during cooler times of the day such as early in the morning or early evening.
- Avoid using your oven as it will add more heat to your home. Try lighter summer foods such as cold meats and salads.
- Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest times of the day.
- Use air conditioning, if available, or an electric fan to keep air circulating.
- Wear light, loose clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton and fit your bed with cotton sheets.
- Keep windows and doors closed during the hottest part of the day and open them to catch the cool breeze when the sun goes down.
- Apply a damp cloth to your neck and face or have a cold shower to cool down.
- Unplug appliances you are not using - plugged in appliances can generate heat even when they are off.
- Turn lights off if you are not in the room.
